The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker.

What’s Right With The World

The other day I found The Bold Life, a blog by Tess Marshall which she describes as “a delicious and juicy mix of inspiration, spirituality, and personal development.” On one of her latest posts she writes, “It’s very important to notice what’s right about the world. Let’s talk about that, build upon it, grow it. Make a big freakin’ deal about it!” And then goes on to list 52 things that are right with the world to get the positivity started and challenges others to do the same. So here I am, taking on the challenge and sharing it with all of you in hopes that you will continue the chain of positivity. We liked the idea so much that “what’s right with the world” will become a regular feature.  Here’s the first of many.

Yes You Can!

At birth, Rick Hoyt was diagnosed as a “spastic quadriplegic with cerebral palsy”. His parents Dick and Judy Hoyt were told that there was little chance for Rick to live a “normal life”.  This didn’t deter them from doing their best to include Rick in everyday activities.

Rick told his father that he wanted to participate in a 5-mile benefit run for a Lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Far from being a long-distance runner, Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair and they finished all 5 miles, coming in next to last. That night, Rick told his father, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped.”

And that was how Team Hoyt began.

Top Ten Inspiring Nelson Mandela Quotes

“The Mandela Day campaign message is simple: Mr Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. All we are asking is that everyone gives 67 minutes of their time, whether it’s supporting your chosen charity or serving your local community.

Mandela Day is a call to action for individuals – for people everywhere – to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mr Mandela did.”

Play Me, I’m Yours

While walking near the State Capitol in Austin, TX a few days ago, we were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful melody coming from a piano. When we got closer, we discovered that it was one of the 14 pianos that have been placed around the city for anyone to play as part of the Art Alliance Austin’s  “Play Me, I’m Yours” art project (part of the Street Pianos project).

The international project got its start in 2008 and has now installed pianos in more than 400 cities around the world. These pianos, which have been beautifully decorated with art and inspiring quotes, invite passers by to take a short break from their day to play some music and bring a little joy into the lives of others around them. It definitely made us smile.

Explore. Dream. Discover.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

— Mark Twain, American author

Life is…

Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is bliss, taste it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it.

Beyond Earth Day

There is a great need, and growing support, for the introduction of new values in our society — where bigger is not necessarily better — where slower can be faster — and where less can be more.

— Gaylord Nelson, principal founder of Earth Day and author of Beyond Earth Day: Fulfilling the Promise

For over 40 years, Earth Day has inspired us to show our commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.  There are simple things we can do, today and everyday, to help protect our planet and be part of the solution. Ready to take part in Earth Day 2011? What do you plan to do today and everyday to help protect our planet?
